2012 OSU Gerontology Keynote Speaker - Albert Starr

Albert Starr, MD

Dr. Albert Starr is an internationally acclaimed surgeon, scientist and teacher.  Dr. Starr has had a profound and enduring effect on the practice of medicine and healing of the human heart.  Dr. Starr is best known for co-inventing and implanting the world’s first successful artificial heart valve – the Starr- Edwards valve.  The mitral valve was followed by an aortic model in 1963 and  Dr. Starr preformed the world’s first successful triple valve replacement at Oregon Health and Science University.   Dr. Starr introduced open-heart surgery to the western United States, contributing many refinements to this now-common procedure and influencing cardiovascular surgeons in major centers around the world.

Dr. Starr’s many awards include the 2007 Albert Lasker Award in the category of Clinical Medical Research, for the development of prosthetic mitral and aortic valves, which have prolonged and enhanced the lives of millions of people with heart disease.

Dr. Starr will be the keynote speaker for the 36th Annual OSU Gerontology conference on Thursday, April 12, 2012.
